  • The RHS Announces ‘Catherine’s Rose’

The RHS has named a rose, bred by Harkness Roses, for Her Royal Highness The Princess of Wales, to celebrate the incredible healing power of nature and raise awareness of the important role that spending time outdoors plays in bringing us joy and supporting our mental, physical and spiritual wellbeing. ‘Catherine’s Rose’, a stunning floribunda, has subtle coral-pink blooms, which are produced in abundance, and have a rich perfume with hints of Turkish Delight and mango. With flowers that attract pollinators, Catherine’s Rose will thrive in a mixed border, as a hedge, in a large container or in a rose bed. Funds from the sale of Catherine’s Rose will go to The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, to help The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust establish a unique training programme for clinical teams across the country. This specialist pre-habilitation and rehabilitation programme will help to ensure patients who need intensive support live well with, and beyond, cancer. Clare Matterson, RHS Director General, said: “As well as supporting the incredible work of The Royal Marsden, Catherine’s Rose will raise awareness of how nature and gardening can help to heal. We know how important this message is as every day we see how accessing nature and being outside is vital for our health and happiness." “Crucially too, Harkness Roses has done a wonderful job breeding this spectacular rose that is going to bring so much joy to all our nation’s gardeners and keep our precious pollinators buzzing too! It’s a really special rose.” Philip Harkness, Managing Director, Harkness Roses, said: “We’re delighted the RHS is naming this stunning floribunda rose for The Princess of Wales, celebrating wellness and nature. It is a privilege for Harkness Roses to work with The Royal Marsden where donations of this beautiful rose will help raise funds for this vital charity.” Dame Cally Palmer, Chief Executive, The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, said: “As a specialist cancer centre, The Royal Marsden’s mission is to ensure every patient has the care and support they need to achieve the best outcome and patient experience." “Every rose sold will help The Royal Marsden establish a unique training programme for clinical teams across the country in prehabilitation and rehabilitation techniques which make such a difference to patient care." “We are honoured to have Their Royal Highnesses The Prince and Princess of Wales as Joint Patrons of our specialist cancer centre and we are very grateful to The Princess and the Royal Horticultural Society for setting up this initiative and for the benefit it will bring to cancer patients everywhere.” The Roses will be available to purchase from today, Friday 9 May, via roses.co.uk and rhsplants.co.uk. Catherine’s Rose will be available by pre-order only and Roses will be delivered in Autumn 2025 as bare root plants. For every plant sold £5 will be donated to The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity. • The Most Common Tech Problems You Can Solve At Home

Tech-averse Britons are being told they can solve the most common technology problems themselves. Cloud experts are advising Brits on some of the most common tech problems they experience and how they can solve them at home without the help of a professional. When experiencing frustrating tech issues, the experts say to look into at-home solutions before rushing out to buy a replacement. Often, the most common issues have a quick fix, whether it be for slow Wi-Fi, sluggish devices or overheating. Juliet Moran from TelephoneSystems.Cloud said: “We want to help technologically challenged Britons to understand how to fix their tech problems without having to contact anyone else. “If you are experiencing issues with freezing or your device is being very sluggish, it is definitely not time to go out and get a new laptop. Instead, there are a few at-home remedies which should get you back online." “Overheating and slow Wi-Fi can also be fixed by just a few simple steps, and there are ways to prevent these issues from recurring.” Here are some of the most common home tech problems and how to fix them: Sluggish Devices If your computer keeps freezing or seems sluggish, there are simple steps that can help get you up and running again. One reason for the issues could be full storage. Get rid of any unused or unimportant files that could be clogging up your device, and consider moving some photos or videos from your device into online storage. When deleting anything on your device, empty the recycle bin. It may be that you have too many programmes running at once and this is causing your device to overwork and become sluggish. Simply go through and close any unused programmes and see how that impacts your experience. Dodgy Wi-FI Connection If your devices are seemingly refusing to connect to Wi-Fi, it could be due to a weak signal or faulty router. If restarting your router and device doesn’t fix the issue, you may be too far away from your router. Try moving closer and see if the connection gets any stronger. Thick walls and floors can actually block your Wi-Fi signal and cause slow speeds, so minimizing these barriers can be a solution. Otherwise, the efficiency of your router will affect your internet speeds, and the age of the router definitely plays a part in this. The Wi-Fi technology that routers use have been upgraded recently, so with Mesh, you can get higher speed Wi-Fi that can handle more traffic than before. Deleting By Accident Have you accidentally deleted something and can’t figure out how to get it back? This is a common tech problem but can be sorted with no stress. Often, deleted files will go into your device’s recycle bin (or ‘trash’ on Mac products), which you can use to access and reinstate lost files. Some programmes, like Microsoft, will have a recovery feature which automatically saves copies of your files, meaning you should be able to recover a previous version of any deleted or lost file. Vulnerable Information And Data Data security is a common tech issue for Britons, and taking measures to protect your vulnerable information is crucial. There are security measures you can put in place, like two-step verification, which is a security measure requiring a second step to log into an account. You may already use it for banking apps with face recognition or a fingerprint scan. This provides an extra layer of security and makes it harder for the hackers to access your data. Back up your data regularly and if you are hit by a virus or infected by malware, you’ll be able to retrieve all lost data. The easiest way to back up devices is on cloud storage. Device Overheating Whilst an overheating device may not stop you from working on what you need to, it can be concerning. Whilst you can still use your device while overheating, it could cause your device to shut down without warning. To avoid overheating, keep your device on a cool, flat surface to stop anything from blocking the fan. During the warmer months, keeping your device out of the sun can also help, as sun exposure can make your device more susceptible to overheating. Regular cleaning can also help keep your device cool, as overheating is often caused by dust getting into your device.

  • British Cycling & Forestry England Join Forces To Boost Cycling

British Cycling and Forestry England have agreed a landmark partnership which will expand access to the nation’s forests for cycling communities across England. This aligns with the National Governing Bodies purpose to bring the joy of cycling to everyone, and England’s largest land manager’s strategic aims, which include enabling the nation’s forests to improve health and wellbeing across society. The partnership was launched with the visitor centre at Forestry England Dalby playing host to the start of stage one of Britain’s biggest professional women’s race, the Lloyds Tour of Britain. This is a key agreement in utilising Forestry England sites to support and enable thousands more people to take to the saddle – largely via inclusive and accessible participation programmes such as Breeze in the Forest – an established programme aimed at encouraging women to ride in safe, traffic-free environments in nature. An innovative part of the agreement will see Limitless – British Cycling’s leading disability and para cycling programme - expand into the forests for the first time with a first-year programme starting during 2025 to support more riders with a disability to take part in off-road cycling and mountain biking in Forestry England sites across England. Through the partnership, there will be enhanced opportunities in the nation’s forests to support cyclists of all ages and abilities - from entry level coaching for children and young people, to new off-road cycling education courses, events, and support for British Cycling's talent pathway, which will utilise the nation’s forests to deliver talent and Great Britain Cycling Team coaching. Building on the recent announcement of British Cycling’s four-year strategy, the partnership supports key strategic priorities to support and grow the sport whilst driving social impact and tackling inequalities by providing more opportunities for people to cycle in off-road and traffic free environments. Amy Gardner, Sport and Participation Director at British Cycling, said: “This is a game changing partnership which will enable more people to get into the forests across England and bring the joy of cycling to everyone. Partnering with Forestry England opens so many opportunities for both organisations. The enhancement of cycling participation projects through utilising forest sites across England, including the introduction of new initiatives, will open the forests to more children and young people, more disabled people, and more people from underserved communities.” Dan Cook, Forestry England’s National Cycling Infrastructure Manager adds: “The nation's forests offer some of the best cycling environments in England, and this landmark partnership with British Cycling will help us open these spaces to even more people. At Forestry England, we're committed to making our forests accessible to everyone, and cycling is a brilliant way to experience the physical and mental wellbeing benefits that spending time in nature provides. We're particularly excited about the Limitless programme bringing cycling opportunities for those with disabilities to our sites, ensuring our forests truly welcome cyclists of all abilities. This collaboration builds on our shared vision to make cycling more inclusive, sustainable and enjoyable for communities across England." Photo credit:   SWpix.com .

  • New Life For Old Office Buildings On Crawley’s Manor Royal

Property consultancy Vail Williams has successfully secured a fresh start for three outdated office buildings on Crawley’s Manor Royal Business Park. The firm acted on behalf of landlord Commercial Freehold & Investments Ltd which had sought advice on what were the best options for its redundant stock in the Northwood Park area of the estate. The three buildings – Sackville, Swift and Kingfisher Houses – were older style office buildings not suited to the demands of modern occupiers. Steve Berrett, Vail Williams’ partner based in Crawley, said: “We were instructed to investigate what form of refurbishment, redevelopment, repurposing or alternative uses would be best for the sites.” The 21,000 sq ft (1,951 sq m) Sackville House on Gatwick Road, previously subject of an unsuccessful bid for a 24-hour gym, was sold and demolished for the development of EV charging facilities and a new Sainsbury’s convenience store, plus a Greggs. The other two, smaller, buildings were retained and Vail Williams successfully let the whole of two-storey, 6,228 sq ft (568 sq m) Swift House to Pioneer Wound Telehealth Ltd on a 15-year lease. The Vail Williams planning team led by regional managing partner Suzanne Holloway then secured change of use planning consent from office building to specialist health clinic for the company, an independent provider to the NHS of specialist wound healing and lymphoedema services across Sussex. After a £500,000 refurbishment, the company’s subsidiary, the long-established Pioneer Wound Healing & Lymphoedema Centres, now operates a Crawley Centre of excellence from Swift House. At Kingfisher House, 3,000 sq ft was let to Cardo Group, a leading provider of high-quality building maintenance and retrofit services for social housing and public sector buildings which sought easy accessibility and good parking. Vail Williams and Graves Jenkins are currently marketing the remaining 4,471 sq ft (415.37 sq m) of space in the two-storey building as offices, with alternative uses considered with a quoting rent of £18.50 per square foot. The open plan, partly refurbished space is being marketed as two flexible units from 2,107 sq ft to 4,471 sq ft with 14 car parking spaces available and the potential to rent more by way of separate negotiation. Stephen Oliver at Graves Jenkins is joint agent. Samantha Bolton, Director at Commercial Freehold & Investments Ltd said: “We are hugely indebted to Vail Williams and Graves Jenkins for helping us overcome the challenges of breathing new life into outdated office buildings." “The team helped us to think outside the box and take a fresh approach towards them, rather than complete redevelopment. The result has been an excellent mixture of uses which adds to the diverse nature of Manor Royal.” Steve added: “This has been a hugely interesting project and we have enjoyed working with the client in ensuring the properties have remained fit for purpose in today’s world. We are keen to get the final refurbished office occupied, welcoming enquiries from business seeking their new home on Manor Royal." “There is currently a great deal of activity at Manor Royal Business District and Vail Williams is very much at the heart of activity with involvement in a number of sites as landlords seek to deliver property to meet the needs of modern occupiers.” Manor Royal Business District is the biggest business park of the Gatwick Diamond area and one of the south east's premier mixed activity employment hubs. It covers an area of 540 acres, with nine million sq ft of commercial space and is home to more than 600 businesses generating 30,000 jobs. Northwood Park is situated in a prominent location on the east side of Gatwick Road on Manor Royal, with handy public transport and easy access to the M23, less than two miles away, and Gatwick Airport. Vail Williams’ full-service property advice includes commercial agency, investment and development advice, building consultancy, property valuation, planning, lease advisory, property asset management, business rates and occupier consultancy.

  • Over 100 FM Businesses Sign Open Letter To The Government

Entrepreneurs Dominic Ponniah and Malcolm Hills, the CEO of office and commercial cleaning company Cleanology and the MD of Think FM respectively, have co-authored an open letter to PM Sir Keir Starmer, Deputy PM Angela Rayner and Business and Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds setting out strong opposition to key elements of the proposed Employment Rights Bill. The co-authors are convinced that the controversial Bill will have a devastating impact on the FM sector – and their grave concerns have been backed by some of the biggest names in facilities management. Collectively the 128 signatory companies represent £7 billion in UK GDP and employ over 156,000 people. The Bill proposes large-scale changes to employment law including making unfair dismissal a day one right, significantly increasing union powers and introducing statutory sick pay from day one. In the letter, which Mr Ponniah has published on LinkedIn, he states: “We are deeply concerned that some of the Bill’s provisions will have serious unintended consequences that could harm both good employers and the very employees that the Bill seeks to protect." “Introducing day-one unfair dismissal rights will increase the legal and financial risk of taking on new hires and discourage employers from offering opportunities to individuals who need a first step, a second chance, or time to prove themselves – and further will discourage growth and reduce employment opportunities — especially in labour-intensive sectors like ours." “Probationary periods are a vital part of responsible recruitment, allowing both parties to assess suitability before long-term commitments are made. This change will also encourage and increase the number of vexatious claims against employers, over-burdening an already overstretched tribunal system heavily weighted in favour of the employee." “Meanwhile, introducing statutory sick pay from day one places a new, immediate cost on employers — especially in sectors like ours where staffing models are built around tight margins and stringent contracts. While we support fair and compassionate sick leave policies, the reality is that many SMEs simply cannot absorb this additional cost without significant impact." “This additional burden will force some employers to reduce staff headcount or reduce their hours, turn down new contracts or even exit the market altogether. None of these outcomes will benefit our employees or our customers, many of whom are public services”. Mr Ponniah stresses the letter – which can be read here – is ‘not party-political’. Most of the Government’s planned reforms to Employment Rights are expected to come in by next year, with other key reforms including curbing ‘zero hour’ contracts, clamping down on ‘fire and rehire’ and enhancing workplace protection. Cleanology – headquartered in Vauxhall, South West London, and with regional offices in Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol and Scotland – runs campaigns throughout the year to raise funds and awareness for hygiene poverty and staff participate in fund-raising opportunities such as marathons. The family owned and run company has been providing professional commercial & office cleaning services, property maintenance and support services to companies across the UK, for almost 25 years. Clients include blue-chip corporates, royal palaces and some of the world’s most famous brands.

  • Diverse Community Of Women Bond Over Shared Outing

Thanks to the inspirational work of International Women's Group (IWG), a women-led voluntary organisation based in the St. Matthew’s Centre in Possilpark, women and children from a community of migrants, refugees, and others living in social isolation in Glasgow enjoyed a day of bonding, exploration, and quality family time during a special summer trip to Five Sisters Zoo. Many of the women IWG support face financial difficulties, social isolation, and limited access to leisure activities, making this trip invaluable for families who rarely have opportunities for such outings. The visit allowed participants to explore wildlife, experience nature, and create lasting memories in a safe and inclusive environment that encouraged social inclusion within Glasgow's diverse community. The zoo outing represented something particularly special as it was chosen by the women themselves, reflecting their desire to engage in an educational and enjoyable outdoor activity with their children. Meriem Timizar, Project Co-ordinator at International Women's Group, commented: "We wanted to offer mums and their children a positive and refreshing experience, and an opportunity to break from routine, enjoy nature, and return to school after the Bank Holiday with renewed energy and spirit. Despite the weather, everyone had a great time. Thank you again the Trust for making it happen with their generous funding; it truly made a difference." The Group supports diverse women in Scotland through education, community events, and equality promotion. The charity delivers workshops and English for Speakers of Other Languages classes to build skills and confidence, helping women overcome isolation and poverty whilst creating volunteering opportunities that empower women to integrate into their new surroundings. Through counselling services, advocacy, support for housing and immigration matters, and mental health workshops, IWG provides comprehensive assistance to help women navigate challenges of life in a new country and thrive in their communities. The Allied Vehicles Charitable Trust donated £1,600 in funding to make this adventure accessible to all families, covering essential costs including bus transportation, park entrance fees, and sandwiches for the group. This support ensured that the women and their children could participate regardless of their financial circumstances. The trip provided a much-needed break for families whilst strengthening the community connections and wellbeing that can help diverse women build a stronger foundation for their futures in Scotland. "It’s wonderful to see so many women and children from diverse backgrounds sharing joy and making memories together. The Allied Vehicles Charitable Trust was set up to make a difference in people’s lives and supporting projects like International Women’s Group, that bring communities together and create positive experiences for families, is how we achieve that.”

  • Local Pub Famous For Its Pies Celebrates More Awards Success

A village pub in Warwickshire has proved once again it has the recipe for success after being named Best Pub in the Coventry & Warwickshire Foodie Awards. The Fleur de Lys in Lowsonford was among 21 winners announced in the fourth Foodie Awards, this week. It was selected after judges visited all of the finalists’ venues in secret. Their verdict on The Fleur given as: “The quintessential English Country Pub that just does everything extremely well. From an excellent range of beers to complement their fabulous Sunday Lunches to truly amazing pies and all with very reasonable pricing.” It wasn’t until the early 20th century when The Fleur de Lys first opened as a tavern, later going on to introduce the ‘pioneering’ idea of serving food and giving rise to the now famous Fleur De Lys pies. The pub first began serving pies through the infamous kitchen hatch during the 1950s, drawing crowds from all over the Midlands to sample Mr Brookes’ finest steak and kidney or chicken and mushroom pies. Owners Nick and Emma Woodhouse, who moved to Warwickshire from Bristol to take over at The Fleur 11 years ago, are passionate about hospitality and have combined 30 years of experience in the industry. Emma, who received the award on Tuesday night, said: “To see the Fleur De Lys recognised as the Best Pub of the Year at the Coventry & Warwickshire Foodie Awards 2025 is incredibly special. For us, this award is testament to the tireless dedication and hard work of our whole team, from all the folks who serve you when you visit to everyone behind the scenes who ensure the wheels keep on turning day in and day out." “Having been custodians of this beautiful old pub for over a decade, we have always endeavoured to make sure our customers know that whatever life throws at them, there will always be a warm welcome waiting for them at the Fleur." “In a climate when hospitality has suffered so many blows and struggled through the last few years, it is hugely rewarding to be recognised for what we do. When so many other brilliant pubs and hospitality businesses are closing down on a weekly basis, this award validates all of our efforts to ensure that our pub remains in the manner to which it has become accustomed." “So many generations have loved the Fleur for decades (and will hopefully for many more years!) which is the true reward in our business, but this awards recognition is definitely the icing on the cake." “The whole awards process has been a joyous celebration of our sector and has also introduced us to some fantastic local independent businesses we didn’t know about before." “We’ve always said that the Fleur De Lys is Warwickshire’s best kept secret, but I guess with this award the cat is truly out of the bag now!” The Fleur team are no strangers to accolades, with their pies continuing to gain national recognition. Most recently, in March, the pub’s Special Spicy Pork and Basil Pie took Silver, while Bronze was awarded for both their Steak and Ale and Wild Mushroom and Asparagus Pies at The British Pie Awards. Among the other awards celebrated, at Kings High School in Warwick, were Best Restaurant, Farm Shop, Sunday Lunch, Coffee Shop/Tea Room, Craft Drink Producer and Chef of the Year. Full list of winners is available here: . The headline sponsors were Aubrey Allen and Alliance Online. Awards organiser Jonathan Smith, of Talk Business, said: “Once again we have been overwhelmed and inspired by the incredible food, drink and hospitality businesses that serve the Coventry and Warwickshire community so well." “In the face of incredible challenges these individuals and businesses prove that this sector is so resilient and can adapt and innovate to ensure they continue to offer all the amazing experiences they do.”

  • Leonard Curtis Secures Commercial Mortgage Deal For Indie Restaurant

Leonard Curtis has secured a commercial mortgage deal for Devrim Zana, an independent restaurant in Sheffield, South Yorkshire.   Trading as Enver’s Turkish Grill, the family-owned business has built a loyal customer base with its recipes inspired by traditional Turkish cuisine and unique dining experience.   A commercial mortgage was agreed by challenger business bank, Allica Bank, with Leonard Curtis’ funding team leveraging their sector knowledge and expertise within the leisure industry to source the most appropriate solution for the business.   Kelly McGrath, Business Development Manager at Leonard Curtis, said: “Labour availability, inflation and consumer spending changes have created a challenging environment within the leisure industry so it’s positive to see independent, family-owned restaurants like Enver’s continuing to thrive. The deal with Allica Bank will not only secure the business’ future, but reduces its outgoings, allowing the reinvestment of capital for other priorities.” Leonard Curtis’ funding team navigated series of challenges to get the purchase completed, working in partnership with Leonard Curtis Legal.   Kirstie Taskin, Director of Devrim Zana, commented: “Buying our commercial building was a stressful experience at times but Kelly kept us calm and guided us through every step. From the very beginning, she was knowledgeable, responsive, and incredibly patient—always there to answer our questions and offer reassurance when things felt overwhelming. Her expertise and steady support made a huge difference.” Ben Green, Business Development Manager at Allica Bank, supported Devrim Zana and Leonard Curtis throughout the process.   Ben said: “The Allica team is delighted to have been able to support this thriving Sheffield restaurant and secure their future in the area. Hospitality and leisure businesses often struggle to find banks with the expertise to lend to them, which is why it was so important they had the support of Kelly and the Leonard Curtis team. It has been rewarding to collaborate with them on this.”
