  • Baileys Crowned As Brits' Favourite Festive Tipple

    Baileys has been crowned as the nation’s favourite festive tipple, with 47% of Brits naming it as their Christmas drink of choice. The results form part of a survey of over 1,000 people by liquor infused ice cream company LiQ, with Baileys beating the likes of prosecco, mulled wine and seasonal coffees or hot chocolates to take the top spot. The study also found Christmas pudding to be Brits’ festive dessert of choice, garnering 31% of votes. And, not content with just enjoying the popular Irish cream brand as a drink, over a quarter of respondents stated they prefer Baileys infused cream as their Christmas pudding accompaniment of choice, second only to the traditional option of custard. The festive survey follows the launch of LiQ’s new range of ice cream pralines which bring together two British Christmas favourites – Baileys and ice cream. Jorgo Struyve, co-founder of LiQ, said: “Baileys has become synonymous with the festive season for many Brits in recent years, so it was not surprising it claimed the top spot. It’s become an iconic part of many people’s festive celebrations, whether they prefer to have it poured over some ice while sitting by the fire, a splash in their hot drink or drizzled over their Christmas pudding, there are so many ways to enjoy Baileys. That’s why we couldn’t think of a more perfect combination for our new pralines." “Our new Baileys ice-cream pralines, offer another exciting way for Brits to enjoy their favourite tipple this Christmas. They can be enjoyed on their own or as an accompaniment to their Christmas pudding or favourite dessert, making them the perfect way to celebrate the festive season.” The results of LiQ’s festive survey are also backed up by Google data which found that searches for Baileys recipes peak around the festive months, with 12,100 searches for Baileys recipes last December, compared to an average of 2,100 searches each month. Last December also marked an increase in searches by 17%, compared to December 2021 which saw 9,900 searches for Baileys recipes, showing Brits still can’t enough of the creamy Irish cream drink. The bitesize treats are indulgent bites of smooth vanilla ice cream, infused with Baileys and enrobed in crisp Belgian milk chocolate, with an Irish cream heart. Made to be enjoyed on their own or as a special dessert accompaniment, the ice cream pralines are ready to eat straight from the box for the perfect festive treat. Launched in 2017 by co-founders Jorgo Struyve and Nicolas Destoop when they were students, the idea for LiQ’s ice cream pralines came from the pair wanting to market an ice cream experience for adults. The brand focuses on offering indulgent experiences through its strong partnerships with global alcohol brands such as Baileys. Since its launch, LiQ has enjoyed immense success internationally, with its pralines stocked in more than 6,000 shops across eight countries, cementing the brand as one of the leaders in the alcohol infused ice cream market.     New research by Geek Retreat , the geek culture retailer, gaming café, community hub and events venue, shows that 15% of Brits have set up their own business in the past ten years, and of these, 44% did so in the last three years. The findings also show that more women (52%) have started their own business in the past three years, compared to men (30%). The top three drivers for making the decision to go it alone were to earn more money (43%), two fifths (41%) said that they wanted to be their own boss, 35% said they needed greater flexibility which they believed they would achieve if they ran their own business. Retail and financial services were the two most popular sectors for start-ups, according 19% and 16% respectively. Whilst over two thirds (68%) said that they run the business on their own, 19% said they had an equal partner and 13% said they had set up with members of the family. However, when it comes to exit strategies, plans are somewhat lacking. Over one third (37%) said they hadn’t thought about what they will do with the business when they retire, 23% said they would close it down and 18% said they would pass it on to a family member. The Geek Retreat franchise, which opened its first store in Glasgow in 2013, now has 36 stores compared to ten at the end of 2019, reflecting its huge popularity on the high street because it offers local communities and individuals a safe and inclusive place to enjoy their hobbies and interests. Having been crowned Employer of the Year at the Scotland Food and Drinks Excellence Awards 2023, the investment will see Aldi increase its employees in Scotland by over 10% in 2024. Aldi also recently committed to a New Year pay rise, making it the first supermarket in the UK to offer rates in line with the Real Living Wage. It will also guarantee store and warehouse colleagues pay of at least £12 an hour. Known for its longstanding commitment to supporting community initiatives, Aldi’s Scottish Sports Fund, which has donated nearly £400,000 to amateur sports clubs to date, will continue in 2024. The retailer’s popular Supermarket Sweep initiative will also return for its ninth year. More than £10,000 was donated to Scottish foodbanks through the initiative in 2023. In November, Aldi announced a new partnership with Age Scotland, encouraging shoppers to submit festive greetings to help combat loneliness amongst the elderly this winter.

    Exciting young Academy graduate Wanya Marçal has extended his stay with Leicester City Football Club to the summer of 2026. The 21-year-old had an impressive start to the 2023/24 Sky Bet Championship campaign, making his full debut away at Huddersfield Town, which finished 1-0 to the Foxes, before going on to score his first senior goal the following week in a 2-1 win over Cardiff City at King Power Stadium. Marçal, who is a Portugal youth international and has been with the Academy since Under-13s level, made his first appearance for Leicester City’s Under-18s in February 2020 and has progressed through the ranks, featuring for the Development Squad on 48 occasions in Premier League 2, scoring 10 goals. In January 2022, he was rewarded for his fine form at Academy level with a maiden senior Leicester City appearance in a 4-1 win over Watford in the Emirates FA Cup Third Round on Filbert Way, and was also named of the bench for three European fixtures that same season.

  • Spinks Secures Funding For Innovative Approach To Rail Seating

    Spinks, a leading spring manufacturer and components supplier to the mattress and furniture industry, has secured a £250,000 research contract to bring its revolutionary EcoSeat™ spring technology to UK rail seating. The research contract is being awarded by the Department for Transport and the UK's innovation agency, Innovate UK, through the ‘First of a Kind’ (FOAK) 2023 funded research competition, and will be used to bring Spinks’ innovative pocket spring technology to the railway industry with the aim of improving overall passenger comfort and experience. The research contract demonstrates the British manufacturer’s ability to provide innovation and cost-saving solutions which will help deliver new 100% recyclable rail seating that incorporates its patented glue-free pocket springs - a key component within mattress production for Spinks’ parent company, luxury mattress manufacturer, Harrison Spinks. Commercial partner in the project, Quantum Seating – a Coventry-based rail seat manufacturer - will bring a wealth of knowledge to the development of longer lasting and 100% recyclable rail seats made using Spinks’ EcoSeat™ microcoils, plus integrating hemp, which is grown on the company’s 300-acre farm in Yorkshire. The seats aim to be the most comfortable and sustainable rail seat and will be part of an existing Quantum Seating aluminium frame along with seat covers made with high wool content. With flammability standards difficult to meet with conventional foams, flame retardants and fire barriers are normally added to the seat construction, however this is not necessary with EcoSeat™. Spinks and Quantum Seating are also collaborating with Angel Trains, which operates over 4,000 trains and represents more than one-third of the UK’s passenger rolling stock, specialising in innovative and sustainable rail vehicles. The project plans to integrate the innovative seating into new trains for a range of UK rail travel providers.
