- Cyber-Security Firm Awarded Prestigious Gold Award
Leading Dorset cyber-security company C3IA Solutions has received the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme Gold Award. It recognises the firm’s commitment to supporting and advocating for the armed forces and wider defence communities. The company was founded by two former members of the Royal Corps of Signals and has many veterans within its ranks. Since its foundation it has helped veterans and other members of the armed forces community in a number of ways and continues to work within the defence sector both here and abroad. It has sponsored many military sports teams and other projects, as well as supporting individuals within the armed forces community on a variety of endeavours. The awards evening was attended by principal consultants Andy Campbell and Laura Midwinter-Brown as well as Managing Director John Botterill. Andy, who is in his 47th year of military service, said: “I joined C3IA Solutions because I am very aware of their values and ethos which matches my own. As a largely ex-military cohort, our strength comes from our shared experience, allowing us to understand each other and work well together." “I am also enjoying the opportunity to work with younger, non-military staff to offer a mentoring relationship. C3IA Solutions offered me a three-day working week which aligns with my Reservist work, so I can commit one-and-a-half days each week supporting Joint Warfare.” Laura joined C3IA in 2013 after completing 22 years of service in the British Army. She said: “The company supported my transition from soldier to civilian, and over the last 10 years they have encouraged me to develop and grow my skills." “I am proud to be part of a company that has a clear commitment to the armed forces and understand the benefits and skills ex-service personnel can bring to any organisation.” John said: “At C3IA, our team reflects the whole of the armed forces community and the wider defence community, including veterans, reservists and military spouses. “We value the diverse perspectives and experiences that each member brings. We would like to thank Wessex RFCA and Defence Relationship Management (DRM) for the prestigious award and we look forward to continuing our support in the future.”
- Apple Trees Are Being Given Away By Thatchers To Community Groups
Somerset cider maker Thatchers has 500 apple trees to give away to community groups up and down the country. In the fourth year of its Community Orchard Project, Thatchers is looking for fifty organisations doing great things in their local neighbourhoods, to be the 2024 recipients of ten apple trees each enabling them to sow the seeds of their own community orchard. To date, Thatchers has donated over 1,000 apple trees to local organisations and groups, each looking to put the apples they grow to good use with their communities. Martin Thatcher, fourth generation of his family to make cider at Myrtle Farm in Somerset says, “This project is all about community. It’s about understanding how apple trees can not only bring joy, but can act as a means of bringing people together." "Whether that’s planting the trees and contributing to the growth of orchards, learning about the lifecycle of a delicious apple, or coming together to press fruit at harvest time, apple trees are a wonderful way to create community spirit. Growing apple trees really matters.” Thatchers is therefore appealing to community groups, charities and organisations to apply to the 2024 project, which opens on 3rd January and runs until Monday 5th February. Applying is easy – simply fill in the details requested on the online application form, with a brief description of your organisation and the good things that would come from receiving a bundle of 10 apple trees in 2024. Thatchers is keen to hear about local groups and charities doing great things in their communities, in both rural and inner city areas. Perhaps those growing fruit and veg for those in need; those working with groups who have little access to outside space; groups who use outdoor space to improve the mental health of their communities; or perhaps residential communities who are looking at ways to bring trees into their lives. Thatchers Cider, which is celebrating its 120 year anniversary in 2024, has been growing apple trees and making cider in Somerset since 1904. It has used its knowledge of apple varieties to create ciders with individual character and great taste all round, such as Thatchers Gold and Thatchers Haze. Thatchers Katy cider is a perfect example of how one apple variety can create such a distinctive cider. With a light, crisp finish, Katy cider is a true reflection of the character of this delicious eating apple. Many of the apple trees being donated this year will be the Katy variety, as well as much loved varieties Scrumptious and Bramley. Every organisation selected to receive trees will be given instructions on how to plant their trees, how to care for them throughout the seasons, and a commemorative plaque. Martin adds, “We all know that planting trees helps the environment and supports biodiversity, but being out in nature is so good for wellbeing too. Over the last three years our project has been able to help over 175 groups across the country from residents associations rewilding their communities; schools and colleges teaching their pupils about the origins of their food; and care homes creating peaceful havens for residents.”

One fundamental advantage lies in the strong foundation of trust and commitment within the family unit. This inherent trust fosters a sense of shared purpose and dedication to the business's long-term sustainability. Moreover, the continuity and intergenerational transfer of values and knowledge stand out as distinctive strengths. Family businesses often benefit from a deep-rooted understanding of their industry, accumulated over generations. This longevity enables them to navigate challenges with a historical perspective, learning from past experiences and adapting to changing market dynamics. The familial bond can also facilitate effective communication and decision-making. This close-knit environment can enhance adaptability, as decisions are often made collaboratively, drawing from diverse perspectives within the family. - York Academics Awarded New Year's Honours 2024
Two University of York academics have been recognised in the New Year’s Honours. Professor Julian Richards has been awarded an OBE, while Professor Rachel Cowgill has been awarded an MBE. Professor Julian Richards has been awarded an OBE for services to Heritage and Digital Archiving, while Professor Rachel Cowgill has been awarded an MBE for services to Culture, Education and the Arts. Julian Richards is a professor in the Department of Archaeology at the University of York and Director of the Archaeology Data Service, the national digital data archive for archaeological research. Professor Richards specialises in the archaeology of Anglo-Saxon and Viking Age England and is a leading expert on applications of information science in archaeology. Professor Richards said: "I am thrilled to receive this award, particularly as it recognises the importance of digital archiving. In archaeology when we excavate a site we destroy it and the archive provides the only record of the past, preserving key information for the future. Those archives are increasingly digital, but also very fragile." “In York we have pioneered digital data preservation for over 25 years and have become world leaders, making our data archives freely available online for all to use. I've been fortunate to have worked with some amazing people and thank them all for their support over the years." Rachel Cowgill is a Professor of Music in the School of Arts and Creative Technologies at the University of York. Her research explores music’s relationships with culture, place and history, and covers a wide range of genres, from ragtime and street ballads to opera and oratorio. She is interested in the traces left by musical performances through history, and her recent InterMusE project, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), focused on community digital-archiving of ephemera such as concert programmes and reviews, as well as individual and collective memories. Professor Cowgill also initiated and co-led StreetLife, an interdisciplinary project funded by the Government’s Community Renewal Fund to breathe new life into York’s historic Coney Street. The project team has worked closely with partners and the local community to revitalise empty shops and venues, creating a pop-up hub, workshops, apprenticeships, and a number of job opportunities across the heritage and creative sectors. Professor Cowgill said: “I am delighted to receive this award, which recognises the value of culture and the arts at a time when the performing arts in particular are being undermined by funding cuts, and schools are disincentivised from providing sustained and inclusive opportunities for young people to develop creatively." “I have exceptionally talented, incredibly supportive colleagues at York, and I’m particularly proud of our community-led research drawing on the musical heritage of York to shape its future and our work to put creativity and local communities at the heart of regeneration projects in our city.” Professor Duncan Petrie, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at the University of York, added: “It is fantastic to see Rachel and Julian’s work recognised with an MBE and an OBE. They are both outstanding researchers who have made extensive contributions to their fields." “Rachel and Julian are inspirational colleagues who have dedicated themselves to projects with far-reaching impacts on their academic disciplines and the wider community, embodying the innovation, creativity and public service that characterises York research.”

Whether casting a line into a tranquil lake, navigating a river's current, or braving the open sea, fishing is a diverse and rewarding pursuit that combines skill, patience, and a deep connection with nature. Successful fishing starts with choosing the appropriate gear. Consider the type of water you'll be fishing in – freshwater or saltwater – and the target species. Fishing rods, reels, lines, and baits vary based on these factors. Each fishing location is unique, influenced by factors like water temperature, depth, and the presence of vegetation. From casting off piers to deep-sea excursions, anglers pursue a diverse range of species, including tuna, marlin, and snapper. Conservation And Ethics Responsible fishing involves practicing catch and release, especially with endangered or overexploited species.
