- Expert Warns Brits About New ‘Smishing’ Scam
Tech specialists from IT training provider Tecnovy Academy have issued a warning to Brits, as a new SMS scam erupts across the US, with fears scammers will target the UK next. The scam is a form of ‘smishing’, or SMS phishing, where victims are targeted via text messages, informing them that they have an unpaid fine for using a toll road. These texts prompt users to enter their credit card details into a third-party site, in order to settle the ‘fine’. A large number of US citizens have taken to social media to share the unusual texts they have received, prompting the following warning from the Federal Trade Committee (FTC): ‘Whether you’ve driven through a toll recently or not, you might’ve gotten a text saying you owe money for unpaid tolls. It’s probably a scam. Scammers are pretending to be tolling agencies from coast to coast and sending texts demanding money.’ Many of the UK’s toll roads allow contactless payments at the gates, with a charge calculated and taken from your account long after you have driven away. Others, such as the Mersey Gateway Bridge, are free flow tolls, meaning drivers can pay online before or after using the road. This switch to cash-free, digital payments makes the UK a potential target for this new toll road smishing scam. Ertul Topuzoglu, CEO of Tecnovy Academy, has offered the following information on the scam, including advice to anyone who may receive a suspicious text: “This scam is a clever one, as the texts often give a small and specific amount of money that users supposedly owe, which adds an air of credibility to the trap." “The text will prompt recipients to click on a link, and then to fill in either their bank or their credit card details. Not only is the scammer attempting to gain access to your account to steal money, but also to get your personal information in order to steal your identity." “If you receive a suspicious text about an unpaid toll fine, do not click on any links or reply to the message. The scammers want you to act quickly, but it is better to pause and check out the legitimacy of the message." “Reach out to the tolling company via contact details on their official website, rather than using any information from the text. You should then forward the suspicious text to 7726, which is free to do, and will report the scam to your mobile provider." “If you think you have lost money or been hacked because of this scam, contact Action Fraud by reporting online or calling 0300 123 2040 if you are in England or Wales, or report the scam to the police if you are in Scotland." “Warning your friends and family about potential scams like this one can help to protect those who may be more vulnerable to phishing.”
- Notts Sport Unveils CocoTurf, Revolutionising Outdoor Play
Notts Sport, the leading specialist in play and sports surfacing, is proud to present CocoTurf , the world's first non-plastic artificial turf made from natural coconut fibres. This innovative play surface offers a solution for playgrounds and recreational spaces, combining durability and performance with an unprecedented eco-friendly design with zero plastics, zero microplastics and PFAS. As the demand for sustainable products grows, Notts Sport introduces CocoTurf, an environmentally conscious alternative for safer surfacing. CocoTurf combines the durability and purpose of artificial grass with the environmental benefits of a natural, renewable material. CocoTurf is an innovative product that challenges the standard of traditional synthetic turf, which typically relies on plastic materials. Instead, CocoTurf is made from coconut husks with specialist plant-based and certified natural rubber latex backing, so it is 100% non-plastic and 100% natural components, a safe, microplastic-free, PFAS-free, non-toxic option for children's playgrounds. A single coconut typically provides 200grams of useable fibres, and the husks of 600 coconuts provide sufficient fibres to help create a 60 square metre children’s play area. Designed to meet the needs of high-traffic spaces, CocoTurf is the perfect hardwearing alternative for schools and parks seeking an eco-friendly, safer surfacing solution that minimises the environmental footprint of artificial surfaces. Duncan Bennett, CEO at Notts Sport: "This is a milestone in the evolution of outdoor play surfaces. Our drive to find ever more sustainable surfacing solutions has led us to invent the world's first non-plastic, synthetic grass – CocoTurf. This is not just another product — it's a revolution in sustainability. For the first time, communities can install an artificial surface without the harmful impact of plastics. This is the future of play surfaces, and we're thrilled to lead the charge."
- Trade And Investment Focus At Hampshire Chamber
Business leaders in Hampshire and the Irish port of Drogheda have signed an international accord designed to foster mutual trade and investment opportunities. The ‘friendship and solidarity twinning agreement’ is between Hampshire Chamber of Commerce and the Drogheda and District Chamber. It follows recent collaborations involving business, education and civic leaders in the two regions and was formally inked as part of Portsmouth & South Coast Business Week. Signing the four-year agreement on behalf of Hampshire Chamber, Chief Executive Ross McNally said: “We are setting the scene for closer trade links between us and Drogheda and the potential to generate jobs and inward investment in both regions. This is all about two chambers of commerce working closer together for the benefit of our respective memberships." “It a great opportunity for Hampshire firms to extend their reach and contacts with an EU port and likewise for Drogheda businesses to leverage the scope for more trading here in the UK.” Drogheda is in County Louth, around 40km (25 miles) north of Dublin, and is home to more than 40,000 inhabitants. Its industries include brewing, distilling and port operations. Close ties between Drogheda and Portsmouth are graphically illustrated by the two ports’ coats of arms, which both feature a star and crescent moon. The emblems, also shared by Portsmouth and Drogheda football clubs, have historical significance rooted in both industrial and port communities. Drogheda Chamber Chief Executive Hubert Murphy, who was on the Irish delegation to Portsmouth & South Coast Business Week and signed the agreement with Ross, said: “We want to put Drogheda and its incredible potential on the big stage and this was truly one of these moments. We intend to create solid working relationships with the team in Hampshire and open routes for our members to do business there via our contacts." “At the same time, we’ll open channels for overseas parties to make Drogheda their European base. For instance, the opportunities around offshore wind are huge and I believe we can engage people to be part of that journey for this region.” Under the agreement, the two chambers pledge to promote trade and investment opportunities between their respective regions, exchange information and best practice on chamber operations and member services, and host joint events, business delegations and networking sessions. Portsmouth & South Coast Business Week brought together Hampshire Chamber partners from business, local government, education and the third sector for a busy programme of presentations, networking and behind-the-scenes visits. As well as Portsmouth, events took place at venues in Havant, Gosport, Fareham and Southampton, with sessions streamed on Facebook Live.

- Cumbrian Hospitality Team Takes 30 Mile Hike For Charity
A brave band of walkers from a Lake District hotel group has tackled a one day 30 mile hiking challenge to raise funds for a local charitable organisation. The team of six hikers from English Lakes Hotels Resorts & Venues completed the walk from Wild Boar Estate in south Cumbria to Lancaster House Hotel in around 12 hours. Funds raised so far by sponsorship are being donated to BEE Adventures, a not-for-profit community interest company which helps disadvantaged children and vulnerable teens by giving them opportunities to go on outdoor guided adventures. The total raised thus far from group and personal fundraising efforts is over £1,600 with the chance to make further donations still open at here . The team assembled at dawn for a briefing and hearty breakfast at Wild Boar Estate in the southern Lake District. They set off on their epic trek at 7:30am with the aim to complete the 30 miles within their 12 hour target time with breaks for refreshments and rest built in. The route took in a number of local landmarks in south Cumbria and along the Morecambe Bay shoreline. It included total ascending of 786 metres into the bargain with one or two steep climbs to conquer on the way, as well as the team dealing with some boggy terrain due to the inclement weather. Support was provided throughout the day by Adam Ordonez from Bee Adventures, who was ‘vehicle point-man’ for the journey with much needed supplies of food and water. Faye McGuinness from English Lakes Hotels Resorts & Venues, who organised the charity walk, says: “We decided to set up this genuinely challenging hike to promote wellbeing and team camaraderie as well as supporting BEE Adventures with the amazing work they are doing." “Despite the numerous blisters and sore limbs we accrued along the way, as well as the odd downpour or two, the walk was a great success and a brilliant day for us all. We are looking at working with the organisation more closely in the future with more challenges like this one.” The funds raised by the English Lakes Hotels hiking team for BEE Adventures will specifically support its community projects such as The Primary Student Adventure Programme and The Student Adventure Project. Co-founder of BEE Adventures Ryan Bond adds: "We are eternally grateful to English Lakes Hotels for the support they have given us. The outdoors saved my life and led to the creation of BEE Adventures, and the money they have raised will now give more at-risk young people opportunities they would normally never have." “The group on the day showed true grit and determination. 30 miles over 12 hours of walking in poor weather is a very tough day, but their characters shone through and they smiled through the pain. Such a huge achievement! Thank you!"

- Surrey Filter Maker Flags Pharmaceuticals At New York’s InterPhex
A Surrey manufacturer is set to highlight innovations in critical process filtration for the global pharmaceuticals market at a major industry showcase in New York. Camberley-based Amazon Filters will engage with decision makers from drugs and medicines manufacturers, supply chain companies and regulators when it exhibits at InterPhex in April 2025. The aim is to explain how process filters, sanitary housings and customized filtration solutions from the 40-year-old firm can support essential liquid and gas applications involved in the complex, multi-step chemistry of drugs, medications and other pharmaceuticals products whether in tablet, suspension or liquid forms. On Amazon Filters’ stand 2767 at InterPhex will be Pharmaceutical & Healthcare Market Manager Mafalda Silva, Head of Marketing David Ridealgh and Sales Manager Joe Jones. Mafalda said: “The key production areas to benefit from our filters and housings include API (active pharmaceutical ingredient) manufacturing, sterile products, liquid creams and ointments and product support utilities." “InterPhex is the ideal showcase for us to demonstrate the value of our products, tailored solutions and technical support to a worldwide audience gathered together in the same place at the same time. Our number one InterPhex message is: ‘Let us help you protect your people, your process and your product’. “We will discuss how pharmaceutical applications are supported across our portfolio of filters and housings in activities such as particulate and precipitate removal, catalyst recovery, decolorization and sterile filtration. There will be a particular focus on containment solutions to protect operators processing high-potency APIs." “Stand visitors will also learn how we manufacture our pharmaceutical range on-site from developing initial design concepts through to component machining, pressing and welding. This ensures consistent high-quality products fit for purpose and delivered on time worldwide." “In reference to our R&D programme, we will explain how we have developed our portfolio with input from industry partners including global pharmaceutical companies.” On display on Amazon Filters’ stand will be pleated cartridges, meltblown depth filters, lenticular filters, membrane filters and standard and customized housings. The hygienic design ensures the housing is easy to clean and can be sanitized or steam sterilized readily. The base of the housing provides a sump for collection of excess liquid or condensate where necessary. ClearView, another single cartridge housing, has a special clear bowl section for viewing the condition of the filter element. Designed specifically for use in fine chemicals and pharmaceuticals, ClearView is ideal where fluid cleanliness requires visual monitoring online. Other products on the stand will include a coated diaphragm plate and a 50-series housing head, both of which can directly help pharmaceuticals applications. InterPhex takes place at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in Manhattan on 1 to 3 April 2025. Its aim is to provide a comprehensive overview of global advances in pharmaceutical and biotech especially process development and regulatory compliance. - Client Becomes Partner In New Business Venture
A PR and her client have launched a business collaboration after just one year of working together – bringing a combined 50 years of experience in a new marketing agency in south Warwickshire. Amanda Chalmers of Chalmers News PR, in Warwick, has joined professional forces with Bianca Rodrigues-Perry, from Leamington, to launch Bia’s Marketing Production & PR this week. Brazilian-born Bianca – also known as the face of YouTube’s Bia’s Kitchen Show – is reprising her career after enjoying huge success as the co-owner of a marketing agency in her native Rio de Janeiro before moving to the UK with her new husband 15 years ago. After enjoying success for her own brand through Amanda’s established PR agency, Bianca quickly recognised the potential for collaboration and the women, who hail from countries 5,500 miles apart, have now come together to combine their respective expertise to benefit businesses in Warwickshire and beyond. Bia Rodrigues-Perry has over 20 years of experience in marketing and production, working with a portfolio of international brands including McDonalds, Gillette and M&Ms. She possesses the magic touch when it comes to elevating businesses or products to new heights, through a variety of tried and tested techniques, from essential marketing advice and support through to curating showcase events and productions which not only highlight - but celebrate - the brands. Last year, just a few months into launching her show, she was crowned Outstanding Entrepreneur of the Year at the Ladies First Network Business and Inspirational Awards. Amanda Chalmers is a trained journalist with over three decades of experience who now boasts a portfolio of successful PR campaigns through her multi-award-winning agency. Her news desk experience and bulging contacts book combine with her boundless enthusiasm, integrity and tenacity to bring the best results for her clients every time. Working with PRs in her capacity as a former newspaper editor in south Warwickshire, Amanda understands exactly what it takes to make a story stand out to both the journalist and potential audience. Both women have also been nominated for the Ladies First Professional Development Business Awards, Bianca for Businesswoman of the Year and Influencer of the Year and Amanda for Professional Services Excellence. Bia’s Marketing Production & PR offers the full range of marketing and PR services including marketing strategies, branding, website design, social media ads, events planning, content creation and social media management. It also offers access to appearance and sponsorship opportunities on sister company Bia’s Kitchen Show, which now boasts more than 60k followers and 6.5k YouTube subscribers. Bianca said: "When I decided to open my marketing and production agency, Amanda was the first person who came to mind for collaboration. Her exceptional PR skills, which elevated my cooking show over the past year, were invaluable. “We share a unique dynamic—similar yet complementary in our differences—that enhances our teamwork. Marketing without PR can feel hollow, and I'm thrilled Amanda accepted being part of this project as my collaborator." Amanda launched Chalmers News PR in November 2018 after leaving the Stratford-upon-Avon Herald editor’s seat, going on to win two national awards for her work in the PR industry. Of the collaboration, she said: “It was immediately apparent upon meeting Bianca for the first time in January last year how driven and ambitious she was – and how hard as a PR, I would have to work to keep pace with her dreams for her Bia’s Kitchen Show brand! But what was also clear was how closely our values and passions are aligned and we have worked together really effectively as PR and client to achieve great results." “Now, with Bianca at a time in her life when she is ready to rebuild her professional reputation in the UK, we realised the potential for what could be achieved if we combined our respective skills and experience as a joint venture. We also both share a passion for supporting the independent food and drink industry, with most of my clients sitting in that sector." “As a sole trader for the past six years, this presents an exciting opportunity for collaboration with a likeminded professional – who started off as a client and has now become a business associate. I am learning so much from Bianca and can’t help but be inspired every day by her energy and drive. We both have a huge appetite for success and I can’t wait to see what the future brings for Bia’s Marketing, Production & PR.” Visit Bia's Marketing here :
- James Donaldson Timber Looks To The Future With New Facility
Leading timber supplier, James Donaldson Timber (JDT) has taken over a leasehold on a new, 110,000ft2 purpose-built manufacturing facility in Chorley. The flagship site at Botany Bay Business Park will more than double current production capacity and improve operational efficiencies, supporting increased output to meet market demand. The size of the factory allows for a number of fully integrated, continuous lines of manufacturing, which will boost productivity and create a better working environment for the team. The fully enclosed facility has scope for 24-hour operations if required, future-proofing the site to allow for market growth and diversification. The increased capacity will have immediate benefits for customers, reducing lead times, enhancing the customer service experience and strengthening stock availability. Situated just two miles from JDT’s existing Chorley site, the location was chosen to integrate with established routes and operational processes, while also minimising disruption for the long-serving skilled workforce. Perform Panel, a division of Donaldson Group subsidiary Nu-Style Products, will also utilise 10,000ft2 of the facility for storage and distribution purposes in the Northwest. Perform Panel has over 35 years of experience and is well known in the UK industry, manufacturing a range of decorative wet wall laminated panels as well as floor, splashback and ceiling products. Work is continuing uninterrupted throughout the transition between the sites, with the new factory expected to be fully operational by autumn 2025. Iain Torrance, managing director of James Donaldson Timber said: “Opening the Chorley branch was our first venture into England back in 2008, and it’s been a hugely successful move for us. It significantly changed our product offering, expanding beyond timber for the first time, and allowed us to better service our clients north and south of the border." “After 17 years, we’ve simply outgrown the site. It was becoming impractical and inefficient and was no longer suitable for our future growth plans. The new site is purpose built as a manufacturing unit with more scope to develop our offering – and it provides a much-improved working environment too, bringing benefits for our customers and our colleagues.” Andrew Donaldson, chief executive officer, the Donaldson Group said: “This is an extremely exciting move for JDT and also for us as a Group, more than doubling the capacity for JDT in England and bringing benefits for Nu Style too. The MDF mouldings market continues to grow at pace and will inevitably increase further once we see the development of much-needed housing across the UK." “JDT is the original part of the Donaldson Group, so we’re particularly proud to see such a positive evolution of this business as we enter our 165th year.” Currently led by the sixth generation of Donaldson, the 165-year-old Donaldson Group comprises a total of 16 specialist timber and building product businesses and brands, operating throughout the UK.
- Scottish Businesses Crippled By Soaring Energy Costs
Scottish businesses are feeling the squeeze from rising energy costs, with nearly nine in ten (88%) saying it has impacted them – and 62% reporting a significant impact. New research conducted by Diffley Partnership and Stratcom UK commissioned by Octopus Energy reveals the stark reality for businesses across Scotland. Higher energy prices are affecting jobs, investment and customer prices, with two thirds (66%) of businesses saying it has influenced hiring decisions and more than three quarters (77%) saying it has contributed to price hikes for customers. While pessimistic about the current situation, businesses are positive regarding the way forward. The research shows overwhelming support for a shift to zonal pricing – a system where energy costs reflect the amount of energy produced in a region. Two thirds (64%) support energy pricing reform over just 14% opposition. The highest levels of support came from manufacturing and IT sectors, which could stand to benefit the most from zonal pricing. With masses of wind farms in Scotland, such a move would give Scottish businesses and households some of the lowest prices in Europe. If energy prices were to drop significantly, businesses report they would increase staffing levels (64%), invest more in their business (74%) and even bring benefits outside of industry by lowering prices for customers (70%). This research comes off the back of a landmark report by FTI Consulting commissioned by Octopus Energy, which found that introducing zonal pricing across the UK could save households and businesses £55 billion on energy bills over the coming decades. Greg Jackson, Founder of Octopus Energy Group, said: “Under our current system hard-up Scottish households and businesses are exposed to some of the highest energy prices in Europe, while wind farm owners are paid nearly £2 billion annually to turn off cheap green energy in Scotland that could be helping out local consumers." “This research shows the status quo is indefensible given its impact on jobs and investment. It’s hurting households and businesses and has got to change if we want to grow." “Under zonal pricing, the whole country would save £55bn on bills, prices in Scotland would be amongst the cheapest in Europe and Scottish businesses would thrive.” "A Scottish business owner who responded to the survey said “[high energy prices] have affected pay increases and the number of new positions we hire.” Another added: "Scottish businesses must benefit directly from renewable energy generated onshore and offshore in Scotland." As the UK looks for ways to tackle high energy costs, Scottish businesses are making it clear: a fairer, greener system that rewards renewables could be the key.
- Sainsbury's Transforms Food Waste Into Fuel For 30 Trucks
Sainsbury’s is set to revolutionise its logistics by transforming food waste into fuel for a number of its HGV trucks. From next month, the pioneering initiative will see biofuel produced directly from Sainsbury's food waste power 30 trucks at its Emerald Park distribution centre in Bristol, half the site’s fleet. This will save over 3,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually, equivalent to the yearly electricity consumption of 1,950 households*. Waste processor RenECO currently works with Sainsbury's to turn food waste that can’t be donated or used for animal feed into biogas via anaerobic digestion. This circular system will now use the output of this anaerobic digestion, the biogas, to create a liquid biofuel suitable for HGVs. Unlike traditional methods that mix certified biomethane with non-renewable gases, this system ensures all fuel comes directly from Sainsbury’s waste. By working together, the retailer and supplier have shown how collaboration is key to unlocking new ways of reducing environmental impact. The circular system also allows for precise tracking of carbon emission reductions, contributing to Sainsbury’s scope 1 & 2 emission reduction target. Patrick Dunne, Sainsbury’s Chief Property and Procurement Officer, commented: “Today’s announcement underscores the power that collaboration has in driving impactful change across business. We are proud to have worked closely with our supplier RenECO to deliver a pioneering move that supports our commitment to circularity and helps us to take a further step towards becoming net zero across our operations by 2035.” * 1 tonne of CO2 is equivalent to the electricity consumption of 0.65 average households a for a year.
