Johnston Carmichael Appoints New Audit Director In Aberdeen

Johnston Carmichael has strengthened its audit offering in Aberdeen with the appointment of Teresa Gilligan as audit director to support the firm’s continued investment in the North East.

Teresa joins the leading UK accountancy and business advisory firm with more than 17 years’ experience in audit and assurance, gained across Big Four and other professional services firms. She has worked with a diverse range of clients spanning sectors including industrial manufacturing, logistics, retail and property, supporting listed, private equity‑backed and owner‑managed businesses.

A dual‑qualified accountant, Teresa is both a chartered and a certified public accountant. She has spent a significant part of her career working internationally and brings extensive experience delivering audit engagements under both UK and US reporting standards.

Alongside her client work, Teresa has undertaken a range of quality and technical review roles while also supporting internal training and people development by implementing strategies that foster culture and long-term talent growth.

Based in Aberdeen, Teresa will focus on developing her audit portfolio across a broad and diverse client base, with a particular emphasis on the energy sector. This is a key industry for the firm, which supports more than 800 businesses operating across the sector.

She will also support the wider team as the firm continues to grow and develop its audit services. Johnston Carmichael audits more of Scotland’s top 100 businesses than any other accountancy firm.

Teresa said:

“I’m pleased to be joining Johnston Carmichael at such an exciting time for the firm. It has a well‑established reputation for delivering high‑quality advice while maintaining a genuinely collaborative and client‑focused approach."

“Throughout my career, building strong relationships with clients has always been a key priority, and Johnston Carmichael’s relationship‑led ethos strongly resonates with me. The firm’s ambition for growth, combined with its commitment to doing the right thing for its clients and its people, really stood out."

“The energy sector is such a vital part of the North East economy, and I’m looking forward to working with clients across this space, supporting them through the challenges and opportunities presented by a changing landscape.”

David Wilson, Aberdeen Office Head & Audit Partner said:

“The energy sector is undergoing a period of profound transformation, and businesses operating within it face a uniquely complex set of financial reporting and regulatory challenges. Teresa’s expertise means our clients in the energy industry can have confidence they are receiving audit and assurance services that truly reflect the realities of their sector."

“As we mark 90 years in business in 2026, Teresa’s appointment reflects our ongoing investment in our people and our future. With almost 900 colleagues across the firm, Teresa’s values and experience align strongly with our culture, and we look forward to the contribution she will make to our audit team.”

Jack O’Brien has been appointed Joint Managing Director alongside founder and mother, Robyn Holmes. This momentous occasion marks a significant step forward for the family business, which has been proudly serving the community since its founding in 1992.

Prime Appointments was established by Robyn Holmes with a vision to deliver exceptional recruitment services rooted in integrity and community values. Starting from a small office on Witham High Street, Robyn’s dedication and leadership have transformed the company into a leading independent recruitment agency, now with an additional office in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk.

Reflecting on the company’s journey, Robyn said: “It takes a great team to make a business successful. Being transparent with our team about the planned future of the business has always been key. At Prime, we have an open-door policy and ensure all staff feel they are part of our family and its core values.”

Now, as Jack steps into his new role, he will work closely with Robyn to continue the company’s growth and evolution.

Building on a Strong Foundation

Jack joined Prime Appointments in 2011 and has held various roles, gaining valuable experience across all levels of the business. His dedication and hard work culminated in his appointment as Director in 2020. Over the years, Jack has earned the respect of his colleagues and clients alike.

Speaking about his new role, Jack said: “It’s a true privilege to take on this role and continue the fantastic work that Mum and the whole Prime team have achieved over the years."

"I look forward to building on the strong foundations, embracing new challenges, and ensuring that Prime Appointments thrives for years to come.”

Robyn expressed her excitement about the transition: “Prime Appointments has always been a family business, and I’m thrilled to welcome Jack into the role of Joint Managing Director. His drive and passion make him the ideal person to work alongside me as we build on the success we’ve established over the years.”

Looking Ahead

This leadership change also signifies a shift for Robyn, who will transition into the role of Chairman over the next 18 months. Jack will collaborate closely with Finance Director Layla Drewell, who has been instrumental in streamlining processes and delivering key management insights. Together, they are committed to ensuring Prime Appointments continues to lead in service, quality, compliance, and transparency across East Anglia.

In addition to Jack’s appointment, Katie Holmes, Robyn’s daughter, has played a vital role in the business since joining in 2019. As Manager of the Office & Finance divisions, Katie’s contributions have been key to the company’s success. Robyn noted: “Katie has been a vital part of our team, and her efforts have helped us grow and strengthen the company. With Jack and Katie working together, I am confident that Prime Appointments will continue to thrive and adapt to the changing recruitment landscape.”

Katie added: “It’s an exciting time for the business. I am thrilled for Jack and proud of his achievements. I look forward to collaborating with him to take Prime Appointments to the next level, expanding our services to meet the evolving needs of our clients and candidates.”

Jack and Katie have both participated in fundraising events, including skydives, local Half-Marathons and most recently the London Marathon, showcasing their dedication to making a positive impact.

Jack emphasised the importance of continuing this work: “The money we raise is so important to so many people. It’s an honour to contribute to such a meaningful cause, and I’m committed to helping us continue to raise money and reach our next target.”
