  • Hyde To Lead England In Arena Polo Clash Against Ireland At Hickstead

The teams have been named for the Hurlingham Polo Assocation's Annual International Polo Day, which will be held at the All England Polo Club at Hickstead on Saturday 20 January. The feature match of the day is the Inspired International Arena Polo Test Match for the Bryan Morrison Trophy, in which England will face Ireland. The last time the two teams met at Hickstead was in 2022, when the home team won 16-13. Captaining England for the first time is Hickstead test match regular Jack Hyde, 26, who plays off an arena handicap of 8. He is joined by Warwickshire-based Matias Amaya (handicap 7) and Sebastian Hancock (5). The England coach (and off-field reserve) is Max Charlton. Facing them will be the trio for Ireland, captained by 8-goaler Richard Tyrone. Experienced arena player Richard will play alongside Michael Henderson (7-goaler) and Hickstead-based Niall Donnelly, who plays off an arena handicap of 5. The Ireland coach reserve is 5-goaler Evan Power. “What an exciting line-up we have for this year’s Bryan Morrison Trophy, with two very strong, equally-matched teams,” says AEPC Chairman John Bunn. “Ireland will be keen to win this match after losing to the home side here in 2022, but England has an excellent track record in the Arena Polo Test Match and I’m sure they’ll be equally keen to extend their winning run at this fixture. We hope lots of polo fans – and newcomers to the sport – will join us for what’s bound to be a superb day of sport.” The day's action will kick off with the British Junior Match, which gets underway at 11.30am. The two teams are Junior Blue, captained by 15-year-old Estanislao Mariano Darritchon (2), with 16-year-old Archie Heseltine (2) and 17-year-old Hugh Bate (1); and Junior Red, captained by Rafi Bruckner (2), with 17-year-old Logan Anderson (2) and 15-year-old Wilfred Bate (1), who is the younger brother of Hugh from the Junior Blue team. This means visitors will get to witness two thrilling games of arena polo for just £8 per ticket when bought in advance, with advance discounts ending on Monday 15 January. After this point, tickets will be £10 when bought online or at the gate. There is also a post-match dinner, held in the Beethoven Suite overlooking Hickstead's famous International Arena. Diners will enjoy three delicious courses, and will have the chance to reflect upon the day’s action with the polo players and various supporters of the sport. Tickets are £60 each, including admission. Hickstead has played host to arena polo since 2006. Unlike summer polo, there are only three members per team instead of four, and the game is played with a larger and softer ball. The arena is also boarded throughout so shots and angles can be played off the sides of the arena, which is much smaller than in the summer version of the game. At the All England Polo Club, the Clubhouse and bar overlook the arena, so visitors are guaranteed a superb view of the action. • Gardens With A Twist To Feature At RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2024

An edible skate park, growing for gut health, and a tropical forest full of rare and unusual plants put a twist on gardening in the All About Plants category line-up supported by Project Giving Back at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show. Featuring 100% edible plants, the Planet Good Earth Garden by Betongpark & Urban Organic turn their garden into RHS Chelsea’s first edible skate park with a two tonne granite skate ramp nestled amongst its planting. Created by a collection of skaters, parents and food growers, the garden highlights how fun outdoor learning in a natural setting can positively impact wellbeing and confidence in young people. Taking another new approach to grow your own, the Bowel Research UK Microbiome Garden by Sid Hill and Chris Hull champions growing for gut health, offering a probiotic feast in the form of an edible wildflower meadow. Sweet dock, lupins, and camassia feature heavily for their gut positive qualities as the garden explores the connection between soil health, plant life, and the human microbiome. Turning away from the traditional planting palette usually seen at RHS Chelsea, The Size of Wales Garden by Daniel Bristow will feature 313 different plant species, many rarely seen at the show, reflecting the number of tree species present in just one hectare of tropical forest. Plants include the moss-like carrot relative Azorella trifurcata along with the eyeballed pincushions of Leptinella ‘Country Park’ and the alien looking Rubus squarrosus. • NFU Responds To Latest Changes In Roll Out Of ELM Scheme

The NFU has responded to Defra Secretary of State Steve Barclay’s announcement of further changes to the Environment Land Management scheme (ELMs). NFU Vice President David Exwood said: “We welcome much of what has been announced including changes to the Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) for 2024, including increased payments and a raft of new options such as support for precision farming and uplands and moorlands. The new actions being made available under SFI will provide further clarity which is much needed by farming businesses in order to plan for the future." “Confirmation of plans to build on the Countryside Stewardship scheme (CS) with a developed and improved offer for 2024 is also welcome including further new and enhanced options for access and wildfire management." “However, we still have more questions than answers around the deliverability of these new options. It remains hugely frustrating that nearly six years on from the Health and Harmony consultation, which set farming in England on a path towards public goods for public payments, government is still a long way behind on its commitments." “With a minimum of 50% reduction in direct payments due in 2024, the tapering of payments to 2027 continues to be very concerning. We urgently need business critical detail on how farmers and growers will smoothly transition from existing agreements to the new offer." “We repeat our calls for Defra to undertake a mid-term review – an urgent assessment is needed of the agricultural transition on food production and farm business viability. Currently, no such impact assessment exists and it is something we have said is an absolute must to ensure these new schemes are set up to succeed." “It is imperative that SFI has sustainable food production at its core, with enough options that sit around productive farming. For this to happen it is absolutely vital that there’s a better balance between policies that focus on enhancing food production as well as the environment." “The NFU remains committed to working with Defra to improve ELMs for all farming sectors to ensure we get the uptake needed to deliver Defra’s own statutory environmental targets and to ensure a future agricultural sector which is resilient and thriving, with farmers doing what they do best; contributing to our national food security by producing sustainable, climate-friendly food alongside protecting and maintaining our environment.”

  • Aldi Named Britain's Favourite Supermarket

Aldi has been named as the nation’s most popular supermarket, according to new polling data for Q4 2023 from YouGov. In the poll, Aldi maintained its position at the top, ranking ahead of its traditional Big Four rivals, as well as M&S and fellow discounter Lidl. It comes after Aldi was named by Which? as the UK’s Cheapest Supermarket of the Year for 2023,having also won the accolade in 2022 and 2021. Britain’s fourth-largest supermarket was also named the UK’s Cheapest Supermarket of the month for December by Which? A basket of 43 everyday items cost £10.38 – or 14% – more at the average Big Four supermarket than at Aldi, while this was 27% more at the most expensive supermarket, Waitrose. Richard Thornton, Communications Director at Aldi, said: “We know that with the rising pressures of the cost of living, customers are looking for ways to save without having to compromise on the quality British food they love." “Aldi continues to offer great quality products at unbeatable prices, which is why we believe British shoppers have voted us the nation’s favourite supermarket yet again.” In 2023, Aldi also attracted more than half a million additional customers and saw customers switch spending from every major UK supermarket, including Tesco, Sainsbury’s, M&S and Lidl, to Aldi.

  • Tesco Make Big Change To Cold & Flu Season Favourite

With cold and flu season in full swing, Tesco is making a big change to its popular own brand pocket tissue multi-packs: the retailer is scrapping the plastic packaging and replacing it with recyclable paper saving more than 55 million pieces of soft plastic. As opposed to boxes of tissues, the pocket version tends to be used on the go, meaning the plastic packaging has a higher chance of ending up in the environment. So, from mid-December, both the individual packs and the wrap around the multi-packs of Tesco’s Gentle White and Balm tissues have started moving into FSC-certified, paper packs. Tesco is the first supermarket to make the change to its own brand pocket tissues that will save almost 35 tonnes of new soft plastic being created each year. Tesco Campaigns Manager, Courtney Pallett, said: “Unlike boxes of tissues, the pocket version tends to be used on the go and can all too easily become litter. The new paper packaging works just as well as the old plastic wrap but is more sustainable.” Reducing the amount of plastic used in its UK business has seen Tesco remove nearly 2.2 billion pieces of plastic since 2019. Plastic removed to date includes: 200+ million bags from deliveries 100+ million extra lids from products such as wipes, creams, yoghurts, and desserts 75+ million tinned multipacks no longer plastic-wrapped 50 million pieces of plastic wrapping from cans of branded beers and ciders 50+ million pieces of plastic from greeting cards
