Econ Engineering, the UK’s leading manufacturer of winter maintenance and highways vehicles, has appointed Gareth Legg as its new Operations Director.

Econ, a Yorkshire-based business with a national reach, has been at the forefront of winter maintenance vehicle solutions for close to 55 years. It designs and manufactures gritters and other vehicles that are widely used by local authorities and private contractors across the UK.

Gareth, who will report into Econ’s Managing Director, Jonathan Lupton, has come on board from his most recent role as Managing Director for Crossroads Truck & Bus Ltd, part of the Hartshorne Crossroads Group of companies, with a turnover of c£100m across nine locations in Yorkshire & Lincolnshire.

Gareth spent ten years working his way up to the position he held when he left, having started as a Bus Development Director in 2013. Before that, he held roles at First Group (Bus Ltd), Schlumberger and EXPRO – both oil and gas service providers.

In his role at Econ, Gareth will be responsible for overseeing all four of the company’s depots and for the smooth running of departmental activities to ensure the most efficient and effective operation for its loyal customer base, which equates to over 85% of the market.

Jonathan Lupton, Managing Director at Econ Engineering, said:

“We’re excited to welcome Gareth and look forward to making the most of his skills and experience. He has a fantastic CV and is extremely knowledgeable in our field of expertise. He will bring insight and fresh ideas from the outside world, which will ensure we retain our position as the market leader.”

Gareth Legg comments on his appointment: “I am thrilled to be joining the team at Econ which has a fantastic history, reputation, and product offering. When I first visited it was the attention to detail and obvious pride in everything they do which stood out to me and why this opportunity is so exciting."

“I look forward to working with Jonathan and the wider team and feel very humbled that I have been trusted to come on board to support and uphold the legacy and future of the business for years to come.”

Econ Engineering was founded in 1969 and is renowned for its innovation, tailor-made products and a first-class customer service culture. It designs and builds all its products using flat metal, which is cut and crafted into each finished vehicle, meaning they can be adapted to individual customer requirements on demand.
